Multi Purpose Taxi Program

Multi Purpose Taxi Program

Multi Purpose Taxi Program - wheelchair accessible taxi Melbourne

The Multi Purpose Taxi Program is a Victorian Government scheme that subsidises taxi fares for people who find it difficult to use public transport because of a disability or a medical condition. Members carry a card that is used when paying for the trip.

We accept Multi Purpose Taxi Program cards on wheelchair accessible bookings. The exact subsidy amount and eligibility rules are set by the government, not by us, so we will not guess at figures here. The current details are on the Victorian Government’s Multi Purpose Taxi Program page, including how to apply and what the card covers.

How it works when you book with us

Booking is the same as any other trip. Tell us at booking that you will be using a Multi Purpose Taxi Program card, and have it ready to present at the end of the trip. The driver processes it the same way as with any other Victorian taxi or hire car.

If you are not yet a member and think you might be eligible, it is worth applying before your next trip. Approval is handled by the government, not by us, so we cannot speed that part up or check your eligibility for you.

Using your card on a wheelchair accessible trip

Most of our Multi Purpose Taxi Program bookings are also wheelchair accessible bookings, since the two commonly go together. That does not change how the card is used. The ramp or hoist is set up before you board, the chair is secured inside, and the card is presented as usual once the trip is finished.

If you also receive NDIS funding, mention that at booking as well. Some passengers use a mix of both depending on the trip, and we can take either on the day as long as we know in advance.

Booking ahead

For appointments or airport trips where timing matters, book ahead rather than calling on the day. See our airport transfer page if that is the trip you are planning, or the suburbs we service page to check we cover your area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you accept Multi Purpose Taxi Program cards?

Yes, on wheelchair accessible bookings, the same as any other Victorian taxi or hire car.

Where do I apply for a Multi Purpose Taxi Program card?

Applications and eligibility are handled by the Victorian Government. Visit their Multi Purpose Taxi Program page for current details.

Can I use a Multi Purpose Taxi Program card and NDIS funding on the same account?

You would use one or the other for a given trip, not both at once. Tell us at booking which applies.

Does the card work on airport trips?

Yes, the card works the same way regardless of the destination.

What to have ready at pickup

Have your card with you rather than in a bag that ends up in the boot. The driver processes it at the end of the trip, the same as a regular fare, so there is nothing to arrange beforehand beyond mentioning it at booking.

If your card has expired or you are waiting on a renewal, tell us when you book so the driver knows to take payment the ordinary way instead.

Why this scheme matters for wheelchair accessible trips

Wheelchair accessible vehicles cost more to run than a standard car, since they carry a ramp or hoist and take longer to load safely. The Multi Purpose Taxi Program exists to bring the cost of a taxi trip closer to what an ordinary passenger pays, for people who cannot use public transport because of a disability or medical condition.

That makes it worth applying for even if you only travel occasionally, not just for regular weekly trips. Check the government page for current eligibility criteria rather than relying on what you have heard from someone else, since the rules are set and updated by the Department, not by individual operators.
